Anode 25th Anniversary Virtual Reality Experience

 

Anode, Inc. held a public celebration for the 25th anniversary of the company. We wanted to show off some emerging technology that allowed guests to participate.

 

The Idea

The idea was a game that had one participant in a Virtual Reality experience (using a Vive headset) and two other participants that interacted with a large touchscreen “console” to watch the person in VR and influence the game. The goal of the game was to reassemble the Anode logo since it had become unstable and exploded. The pieces scattered onto the floor and the VR participant had to pick up and return the pieces to reform the logo. The participants at the console could activate various effects that would make the process more difficult for the VR user.

Wireframes

My main UI design focus was on the environmental elements such as the participant console and other systems within the VR experience. For the console I started with various wireframes.

The Console

The final version of the console ended up with multiple states of interaction. The two users each had a control area with different camera feeds of what the VR user was seeing.

Console Progression

As the game evolved, so did the console. When the “meltdown” of the logo begins the console changes into a danger mode. Buttons are revealed and a countdown begins.

Effects

Console participants could activate various effects such as Toxic Fog and Anti-Gravity. These effects were represented on the console and could be seen in action in the live feeds.

Iconography

Each effect had a unique icon that would appear on the console.

 

Motion Samples

In order to create a more immersive experience, all elements within the VR user’s environment and the console were animated. Along with the user’s assistant named “F.R.N.D.”, various dials, gauges, and messages would change as the game progressed.
